Institutions

My magazine would most likely want to be printed by a mainstream comany. this would help the magazine to get into the market quicker and get sold in well known shops such as WHSmith. Being Printed by a bigger compnay would mean selling some of the media rights of Music to the Max. This would mean that i would lose some of the profits the magazine would make as well as some of the editorial rights. But through this i would make more money as the magazine would have a higher chance of being sold and would also create money through advertising in the magazine. How ever such things as advertising would mean less room to include information for the reader. therefore going with a major company instead of self publishing would result in more likely response of focusing on the profit that the magazine makes rather than what the readers want to read. But to be able to supply the reader with the magazine and to get it out there magazine would need backing and help to provide it. being published by a major company would also help as the magazine could run at a loss in the first year with out a worry while it gets a audience. Because the company will be able to cover the loss, as the magazine once it picks up will payback more than the loss they incountered. such companys as IPC would not publish my magazine. This is because they already contain large music magazines such as NME. which is already aimed at the youth culture and rock. Bauer Media Group already has the magazine Q, which is simular to MTM. Bauer also publishes Mojo magazine which is also simular to Q and MTM as they all focus on lifestyle and music. Bauer would be able to provide the advertising for the magazine and help with advertising the lifestyle of the reader. Bauer would be likely to publish MTM as they have published a couple of magazines already that are more than just music, but include lifestyle as well. The reason why they would also produce mine is because the magazines they produce at the moment such as mojo, are aimed at specific genres such as classic rock for mojo. where as my magazine is not focused on a genre but a age group of the youth. this would include all music genres such as house, dubstep, hip hop and rap to genres such as rock and indie. This would create a lot larger target audience and potential readers for the magazine. A company like Bauer would like the opitunity to publish a magazine with such a large potential audience and large potential income that may come from it.

Representation.

The social group i have chosen to target my audience towards is the teenager to young adult age range. i have not chosen a specific social group such as goths or chavs to target as the magazine is about all popular music out at the moment and this would include all genres. I chose to do this to create a larger audience range creating more possible readers. I have chosen a picture from mojo magazine to compare with one that i took for my media.

in this picuture both my photo and mojos have the person posing in a solid stance and dressed in a formal style. I did this because it represents power and that they both are trying to make the artists stand out and be seen as a major deal to the music industry. mojos magazine have the the artists looking towards the camara to allow the reader to engage with the artists and helps to make a connection and attract the reader to pick the magazine up. I decided to have ash looking away from the camra to show a sign of rebelious behaviour. This was done to try and help incourage the more rebelious youth culture. As this magazine is after all aimed at all groups and in aimed apon what is in the top charts at the time. mojos picture doesnt contain a back ground. this is to make all the concerntration on the artists so with the help of photoshop i decided to do the same and create a white back ground for my magazine frontcover.

This image now makes the reader look at the artists and concerntrate on the artist on the front cover.

I tryed to subvert the conventional stereotype of youths. They are usually seen as antisocial misbehaving yobs. i wanted to change this collective view of the youths and make it more positive. i trieded to acheive this by having my front cover as a youth (ash) dressed more formally and smart, but yet with a sense of modern fashion. this look also implies power and that is a play on the idea that the youth are the future and they will be the ones in charge.

my magazine has a proconsumerist theme to it. As the magazine is about more than just music but the whole culture and life style as well. This means through out the magazine it will include items and where to buy them. as well as advertising for every thing that matches the life style of the young culture. such as watches, after shave, phones, gadgets and more. my magazine will also incurage these advertisements as they provide a income for the magazine and help fund the magazine to be produced and create profit.

Forms and Conventions.

Most magazines created try to stick to the conventional layout of a magazine. Conventions for a front cover may include, bold masterhead line at the top main image large and main cover line of the magazine also large, with additional stories down the side. These conventions are here to help the reader see the magazine title straight away and makes the magazine stand out. the main story is to sell the magazine. This would be the the article that they think is the most important to the reader and is what the reader will want to read. main image is there large to make the cover seem intressting and helps give a sense of what is inside. the image will relate to a section inside the magazine. usually being the main article. a conventional magazine will also consist of smaller article titles. these secondary titles are stories that the editor thinks will be the next most wanted articles and are usually all down one side of the magazine or in one area. A bar code is also put on the front cover along with the price showing the viewer the price and making it easily viewable. the date of the release of the particular issue is also conventionally placed towards the top right of the magazine as it proves it is the up to date issue that has the most recent information published. the reason it is usually placed in the top right is down to the fact that the date has always been placed in the top right of the magazine and this has became a norm for magazines and documents. therefore placing the date in the top right allows the reader to be able to find the date quickly. Conventions dont just exsist on the front cover. they also run through out the magazine. such as on a double page spread the magazine will most likely contain a large bold headline explaing what the spread is about. The spread will most conventionally contain a large picture which relates to the article in the spread. the text in which the spread contains will be placed in large colums of text. these colums might be broken down by smaller pictures refering to the spread, quotations relating to the spread or other sections of text which refer to the spread. these are used to mainly try and stop the reader from either getting bored or not bothering to read it as they are put off by the amount of text on the page. conventions are used to attract readers to the article or magazine and to make the magazine intressting and easy to read.

I chose to produce a "glossy" music and lifestyle magazine. i chose this because i thought a magazine which was about music but also included the lifestyle that is created and influenced through music would attract more people to read as it contains more with in the magazine. the magazines that influenced me in my choice of magazine are "Mojo" and "Q" how ever these magazines influenced me to how i was going to create mine, but i wanted to include more about the lifestyle that music creates such as the festivals and the other media products.

Preliminary Task: Planning materials

Befor creating the priliminary task i under took some research into what the the target audience wanted. I did this through asking people within East Norfolk sixth form to answer my questionaire. The results of the questionaire were then used to create the college magazine on the understanding that the answers were what the target audience wanted. The results to the questionaire were.
Q1. The majority of the vote was no. this helps to show us that College magazines are not intressting to the target audience and dont provide the information they want.
Q2. Most answered no because they did not find it intressting and didnt like the magazine saying that at the moment it is "boring"
Q3. the main things wanted inside a college magazine are sports, music, college events and jobs.
Q4. the most people would want to pay for the college magazine would be 50p but most wanted the magazine to be free.
Q5. the magazine was wanted to be made fortnightly or monthly.
Q6 the students favorite thing about college was breaktime and the social times at college along with the indepedence that the college provides for the student.
Q7. the students did not want a online version of the magazine.
Q8. The students also would not subscribe to the magazine.
Q9. The Target Audience also did not want to work on the magazine
Q10. 100% of students wanted a informal styled magazine.

I will use this information to create a magazine which the target audience will enjoy. Such as a informal monthly magazine which was not boring but included information on music sports jobs and college events.

Priliminary task final piece.

This is my final piece for my priliminary task for a college magazine front cover and contents page.
